๐ฟ Creating Spaces Where Families Can Feel at Home
Our refuge gardens are important spaces for rest, play and recovery. With some thoughtful improvements, we can make them even more welcoming for the families who stay with us. Weโre looking to refresh play areas, strengthen planting spaces, and create environments that reflect the same care, safety and warmth we provide inside our services.
"A safe place to grow": Our garden renovation story.
When families arrive at our refuges, they often come with nothing but a small bag and the hope of safety. Many have left behind homes, their communities, and every familiar place they trusted. For the parents who stay with us, the hardest part is watching their children try to rebuild a sense of normality while coping with trauma they should never have known.
Our outdoor spaces have become tired, overgrown, and in need of love. Broken paving stones, worn out play equipment, and uneven patches and holes in the grass means the gardens do not offer the comfort and healing they could.
But we know what these spaces could become.
We imagine a garden where children feel safe enough to play again. Where Mums can relax, breathe in the sunlight whilst their children play safely. Spaces where vegetables and flowers could be grown by women and children who enjoy and take an interest in gardening.
For families recovering from trauma, outdoor space is more than "nice to have". Research shows that access to green, calm environments reduces anxiety, improves wellbeing and helps children regulate their emotions. In a refuge- where every day is about rebuilding safety - this profoundly matters.
Our dream is to transform the gardens into:
- Colourful, sensory play areas where children can run, explore, and just be kids again.
- Quiet seating spaces where parents can talk, reflect, or find a moment of peace.
- Small growing patches where families can plant flowers, herbs, or vegetables and see something hopeful flourish.
- Welcoming spaces that tell every person who lives there that they are valued and supported by their community.
How your donation helps:
Every pound brings us closer to creating a place of healing. Your support will help us to fund:
- Safe, child friendly play equipment
- New turf and planting beds
- Accessible pathways
- Seating and shaded areas
- Tools and materials for ongoing upkeep
- Bright uplifting touches that make the gardens feel like home.
Together, we can give families a safe place to grow. A renovated garden might seem like a small thing-but for the families who arrive in refuge, it could mean the first moment of calm after months, even years of fear.
With your help, these spaces can become a sanctuary. A place of hope. A place for smiles returning. A place where children who have lost too much can rediscover what it feels like to play freely.
Thank you for believing in this project and in the families who will heal here.
